Our Parliament...

...of which we are rightly proud, is surrounded with a blur of cynicism and sneering at the moment. When I lead History walks around London, we finish at the Houses of Parliament and reflect on our heritage, our constitution and what it means to live under the rule of law...

This piece by Michael Burleigh is a thoughtful read...

I have never known a time when the paucity of talent and vision in Parliament has reached such a low level. The generation that went through the war produced many impressive and cerebral politicians with an international outlook and reputation. The current lot of Tory and Labour MPs seemed consumed with a limited vision and have shrunk back into fighting each other with little regard to loyalty or self respect. With people like Boris Johnson representing this country abroad the regard for Britain which existed during the fifties and sixties has totally evaporated into contempt or indifference. Thank goodness that I belong to an international church that transcends all this. After Mass, I talk and feel comradeship with Italian, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian,Polish, Mexican, Filipino, Nigerian and people from many other countries all of us with a common identity, belief system and value system.

I agree with Francis. Where are the statesmen? Having Boris Johnson to represent us abroad is a joke. And the rest? Well words fail me.
