In the post...

...comes a lovely invitation, which alas I can't accept due to a previous engagement, to a May Procession and Crowning of Our Lady, organised by Rydes Hill School in Surrey. They will walk in procession from the school to St Mary's Church. The Crowning will be followed by a Mass celebrated by the Bishop. It sounds absolutely beautiful, and I do wish I could be there.

What exactly is involved in the 'crowning of our Lady'?

A ceremony in which prayers are said and hymns sung in honour of Mary, and a crown of flowers is placed on her statue. There are usually some Scripture readings, perhaps the Rosary is said, there may be a procession. It's all a v. old tradition associated with Maytime. It links Mary with the freshness of spring, with new life and with purity and joy.
