...about Christmas, could I mention my books? Ideal stocking-filler for girls aged ten and up is We Didn't Mean to Start a School, paperback, fiction, just a happy read. Send a cheque for £6.95p (American readers - this means you, too. I can accept American cheques. $25.00 will cover book and air mail postage) and I'll rush you a copy. It's a traditional school-story, but set in modern times, and has had good reviews...Send cheque to me, Mrs J. Bogle, c/o Dept BLOG, OCU/Christian PO Box 44741 London SW1P 2XA.

You might also be interested in my Book of Seasons and Celebrations, especially if you have been enjoying the EWTN series. The book has ideas for things to make, do, eat, and sing for all the feasts of the year, stacks of interesting historical snippets, information on traditions, folklore, etc. Send me a cheque for £6.95p or $25.00...

How you have the nerve to promote yourself and your tedious, derivative books in this way amazes some of us. Not even Angela Brazil would have been so tasteless.

Children are conservative in their reading tastes. For instance I read practically all the way through Enid Blyton, then Biggles, CS Lewis, the Jennings series. I resisted attempts to make me read better fiction, though I did read "Swallows and Amazon's" at my father's insistance, and Nathanial Hawthorne's Greek Myths. It wasn't total rubbish by any means.

If children say that a work is "boring" then that's the death sentence to it as children's literature - even if it is Shakespeare or the Iliad. However the same criticism from an adult carries almost no weight.

I hope you are not too distressed by cowardly anonymous comments on your blog. I think your books make excellent gifts and I am particularly pleased to find a school story that I can give to my granddaughter with a clear conscience. Keep up the good work!

As a Dominican friar who is used to reading and reviewing books for children with regards to their suitability I can honestly say that 'We didn't mean to start a school' is well worth reading and greatly enjoyable. Some of the children whom I teach are currently reading and reviewing it, and would absolutely love for there to be a sequel. Please keep up the good work!
