....for our Archbishop of Southwark, Archbishop Peter Smith, speaking out clearly defending marriage as the union of a man and a woman and explaining that "No authority has the power to modify the fundamental nature of marriage". There can be no question whatever of the Church allowing any form of "same-sex marriage": this is not something that is negotiable, it's not going to change, it is not ours to change.
The Prime Minister has repeatedly affirmed the importance of the family as central to the stability of society - and he wants a responsible, large and generous society in which we all care for one another and help one another. Plans to belittle marriage by promoting "same-sex unions" will completely undermine any efforts he thinks he is making towards that stable and generous society - it will cut the very guts out of the essence of the thing.
The West is dying because fewer and fewer children are being born. Already we here in Britain have lost over seven million people because they were killed as babies under our abortion law: this has been devastating for us. We have become used to a degree of social chaos that is steadily getting worse. Strong families based on a man and a woman united for life, caring for their children and for their elderly relatives, is the only structure which works: clumsy alternatives centred on an ever-more-intrusive and ever-increasing State are both inefficient and frightening. And they are expensive: so it will be increasingly tempting to complain about elderly people living too well or too long...

Yes, there's going to be real push for suicide, euphemistically entitled "voluntary euthanasia" shortly. Frankly compulsory euthanasia would be better. What could be more cruel than to persuade an old lady that her life is now worthless?
It is similar here in the US, though these social issues seem to pop up and reach climax in Europe first. Same sex marriage is absurd; one doesn't even have to be religious to see that. And don't get me started on abortion. It is the most evil thing accepted in our culture today.
Yes, the elderly will be made to feel selfish as they put strain on the system for living too long while we will continue to applaud the efforts of the womans right to "choose" to do with her unborn baby as she wishes.
I am dumbfounded at the leap from dislike of same sex marriage to euthanasia! It has a horribly familiar ring: you marginalise people you don't approve of and equate all sorts of other completely separate issues with them. Why should gay people not love children and care for elderly people just the same as anyone else?
Dear Sally, you completely miss the point. The issue here is demography.
If only a very small number of children are born, there will be insufficient numbers of people to care for the elderly.
That's the issue.
Failure to support marriage as a union between a man and a woman means failure to support the next generation. And it is the next generation who will care for you and me when we are old.
I am not missing the point at all. Same sex marriages have nothing to do with the birth rate, and to take the point to its logical conclusion if two people cannot have children then they can't have abortions! In fact some gay people do have children, and because it's difficult it's not something that is taken lightly. Same sex unions do not belittle marriage: you may not approve of it but the fact that two people publically declare their love and committment for each other makes for more stability in society, not less. And if we're talking about care for elderly people then have a think about the huge cuts being made in social care, affecting such things as respite and day care for old people with dementia. I can't type fast enough to say what I want to. You make me so cross!
