...and while on the subject...

...of John Paul II, why can't people in Britain (and elsewhere in Europe?) obtain copies of the brilliant film, starring Jon Voight, that tells the story of his life?

I have the DVD, a kind gift from an American friend, but it is not generally available in Britain, due to some - surely hopelessly out of date? - export/copyright restrictions. In the age of the Internet, this seems daft.

What can we do about this? You aren't even allowed to buy a copy by post from America, even for individual use. It's weird. Surely these restrictions belong to the 1950s?

I have had a similar problem with many excellent religious DVD's that can be obtained from Ignatius Press. The distributors really need to make their DVD's playable on European machines. However, we suffer in Britain from a lack of adventurous outlets to take on the business of providing DVD's of this kind. I suppose they think it is too big a risk to take too many titles. St. Anthony's Press (is that the actual title?)sell American DVD's but at the moment outside Ignatius Press we usually have to rely on Amazon. There is more to say about the poor state of Catholic distribution in Britain. I suspect it would fall on deaf ears. Those who are satisfied with the latest book advertised through the British Catholic Press (a respectful nod to yourself) and look no further are actually missing out on some excellent books and DVD's, but we really do need an adventurous spirit to take this on and let everyone know about what is available out there. May I mention the excellent American novels "Fatherless" and "Motherless" by Brian J. Gail, which contain some of the best analyses of the contemporary Church and moral scene that I have ever read? Obtainable only through Amazon at the moment.

Looks like a good movie. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

There is a really good, but very long bio-pic about Pope John Paul II called 'Karol the Man who became Pope'. This is easily available here, and costs very little from Amazon. We watched it as a family and found it very inspiring.
