STILL NEED HELP...

I am still badly in need of more sponsors for my Cycle ride: I'm raising money to help young people get to World Youth Day 2008, and I'm cycling from St Joseph's in New Malden, to St Joseph's Church in Brighton....it's 50 miles, so why not sponsor me at 20p a mile and send me £10? Just send a COMMENT to this Blog, WITH AN EMAIL ADDRESS TO WHICH I CAN RESPOND and I will add you to the sponsorship list.

The ride will start on Sunday Aug 5th. On Monday Aug 6th I'll arrive at the Shrine at West Grinstead in Sussex where people from New Malden will have gathered to greet me (combining it with the a Parish Summer Picnic!)and the following day I cycle on to Brighton, arriving at St Joseph's there at 12 noon.

The ride is partly also to celebrate cycling, and show people that it's a great way to enjoy the countryside, without clogging up the roads with cars!

The local young people who are planning to go to World Youth Day are a nice bunch. You hear all about young people who don't know what they are doing with their lives, have no values etc - well, let's support those who have found a better way.

So... this blog exists solely for the promotion of your own opinions. No comments published which query your perspective. No real Catholic debate. Shame on you. But never mind...perhaps you will at least have had the charity to have read (but perhaps not publicly acknowledge) that SSPX, referring to the Motu Proprio, has extended "...its deep gratitude to the Sovereign Pontiff for this great spiritual benefit..," .

Yes, the SSPX has issued a conciliatory statement about the Motu Proprio. But it also goes on to say 'The Society of St Pius X wishes that the flexible climate established by the new dispositions of the Holy See will make it possible - after the decree of excommunication which affects its bishops has been withdrawn - to consider more strongly the disputed doctrinal issues.' In other words, it won't be willing to be reconciled to the Catholic Church until the decrees of the Second Vatican Council are entirely repudiated and everything returns to what it was at the death of Pope Pius XII in 1958. Should the excommunication be abrogated some certainly will return but I suspect that many will stay as they are because they are unwilling to recognize the authority of the Council at any price. The statement concludes by quoting the Vincentian Canon in defense of their position.

So why don't they come back in then and stop bleating. Perhaps they're scared they might find some real Christians.

What have these comments to do with a sponsored cycle ride?? Go for it, Joanna!

With friends like these (all of them) who needs enemies? Most Catholic commentators on radio and television let the Church down in different ways, whether Peter Stanford, Christina Odone and (in the past) Lavinia Byrne and the Hebblethwaites. But that's the problem, they are chosen, whatever their position, to wrong-foot the Church and make it look absurd. Best not to sup with the Devil, Joanna.

i don't think Joanna'a blog is set up to voice her own opinions. She is entirely Catholic, no more & no less. Not far right, left, liberal etc etc just a loyal daughter of the Church & a tremendous inspiration to all women.i just love her blog..i just love her enthusiasm & getting on with the job.Put me down for a tenner Joanna..happy cycling!

... can't agree with your views, Mrs P. Objective commments submitted to this blog are blocked... hence "no real debate". And in view of Joanna's views re SSPX on the MP, and generalisations about Catholics who attend old rite Mass having "strayed" when all they do is keep the Faith, and show deep love and respect for a sacred, reverent age-old rite, I can't agree she is balanced. That particular post speaks for itself. However, on the whole her posts are fair, and I totally agree she is a great role model for some Catholic women, and her energy in defending the Faith in the media (and probably the energy for the bike ride too)is very admirable, so "best encouragement" Joanna.

Patermari and I have special reason to be grateful to World Youth Day as it was in Canada in 2002 that our son met his future wife. The yare both a great joy to us. I would love to sponsor you just for the effort, whether or not you complete the ride!

Catholiclawyer, its obvious to everyone but yourself that your comments are, in fact, not 'objective'. Additionally, its not Joanna's view of your SSPX that's unbalanced. As she concurs with the Roman Catholic Church & our Holy Fathers on this matter, she's in good company & on solid ground. Finally, if you don't like the blog, please start your own!
Joanna, do you take USA currency for your ride?

It's Joanna's blog. As a professional journalist, Joanna will know what attracts people to the blog and what drives them away, and that will be the main criterion for comments.

SSPX are out of the Church due to their disobedience. It might be that they have managed to achieve the MP by their militancy, in the way that a spolit brat might get his choice of TV programs if he screams loudly and long enough. However the Holy Father can't admit that or everyone will do the same.

Auntie Joanna not only writes but she also wrongs. She also frequently takes up right causes for wrong reasons. From what I understand from others she rarely posts comments that reflect unfavourably on her and her opinions. I am impressed that she has allowed Catholic Lawyer onto her blog and I cannot help wondering why. Perhaps he/she is grand? Would she explain?

"I am impressed that she has allowed Catholic Lawyer onto her blog and I cannot help wondering why."
catholiclawyer is a sock puppet. It's actually Joanna, and designed to create the impression of a lively and controverisal blog when comments get thin on the ground.

If what Malcolm McLean says is true the bloggosphere is crazier and more dishonest than I thought. However, Catholic Lawyer, when you access her link, seems every bit as dotty and unbalanced as Auntie Joanna and the main difference between them is that one blogs and the other, mercifully, does not. Let's hope is stays that way.
