When I was a teenager I worked on a chicken farm on an Israeli kibbutz. One of the volunteers had a dispute with the kibbutz over his treatment, and opened all the doors to the chicken sheds one night, expecting that the next morning, tens of thousands of chickens would be pecking and scratching all over the kibbutz. In fact the plan didn't work, one or two poked their heads out, but by and large the chickens stayed in their sheds.
They're not human beings. They don't attach a value to freedom or aesthetics. In the wild, domestic fowl are jungle dwelling birds. The sheds are warm and gloomy, and familiar and with guaranteed food. That's the environment they like.
