Why is adultery a sin? Well on level it's a breaking of a solemn promise and renunciation of a vocation. But more mundanely, it complicates family life, with children having sometimes several step parents, plus step siblings. It's unclear where a child's duty lies in such circumstances, is the step-parent like a substitute parent, like a teacher or someone else with legitimate authority over the child but not ultimately the adult with the last say, or are step-parents enemies? Too much has focused on the couple, and not enough on the rights of the other people they have dragged into their marriage.
