As the Pope's resignation has settled in, I'm becoming less comfortable with it. I don't know if this is the right precedent. It's hard to say, and we won't know what an alternative course of history would bring. I understand his desire to hand it over to someone more capable. There was a vacuum at the end of JPII's last year of life. But resigning seems to imply the Papacy is arbitrary and not divine. Abdication in history doesn't usually lead to good outcomes. I pray I'm wrong.
