Today...

...was busy. Tackled letters, emails, etc. Blackberrying in warm sunshine, friend's tiny girls eagerly taking part, only occasional squeaks because of stinging nettles (why are they always growing near the best fruit? Is there a scientific explanation, or is it just the perversity of things, Original Sin, consequence of the Fall etc etc?). Back for mugs of tea and delicious warm cake, which had been baking as we worked. Cycled home to desk: work/letters/arrangements re possible speaking engagements while in America/admin. re ecumenical Schools Bible Project/plans for next book/ research for Autumn TV work. Made jam. If you want the recipe, you must get my "Book of Feasts and Seasons", info here.

Am I allowed to mention this ?

During our Canon Law Lectures in seminary we were told of the true Italian case where a priest inadvertently broke the seal of confession.

A southern italian priest on secondment in northern italy did not know that in the local rural slang 'blackberrying' meant adulterous dalliances, so he innocently mentioned it at a public function to everyone's dismay.

{I know this sounds like a joke, and there is a similar one about a mayor's wife falling and the priest complaining to the mayor about the public paving stones, doing the rounds; but this is the truth straight from the mouth of a DCL}

The incredible fact behind this is that through all the centuries of canonical records [this was 1990 so I don't know if it is still the case] there was NOT ONE case, among the trials, of a priest who deliberately, wilfully broke the seal of confession with malice aforethought !

Even if this is a minor exaggeration it is still an awesome record which almost hints at strong divine intervention strengthening frail human will.

Sadly, in the States "Blackberrying" means typing short email messages using a tiny keyboard on a handheld device.

You poor dear Mr leonardi...
I live "in the states" and we have such marvelous harvesting of the most plentiful and beautiful blackberries you have ever seen! We are selling them by the bucketfuls at our farmers market and making beautiful jams and syrups and freezing them for wintertime treats.We can hardly keep up with our sweetcorn, cantalope,tomatoes,raspberries cucumber to name a few before apple
and pumkin season start. Having a marvelous time! Take a sunday drive some place maybe you can see how the other half live..
Joanna good luck with your berry picking and jam making-hope you sell lots!
