A Bishop speaks...
...read here for a fine, uplifting, and important piece of teaching, from a shepherd who is unafraid.
Whilst in some ways we boast of our power over nature - sex change operations are probably the symbol of that - in other ways we've reverted to a very pre-modern attitude. Global warming isn't a technical problem to be technically fixed, but a sort of moral imperative, a demand made on us by nature. To some extent this is just Marie Antoinette and the fake wooden buckets - if you're a queen, it's nice to play at being a milkmaid. If you don't have to worry about where your breakfast is coming from, it's nice to run half a dozen chickens in the back yard and have free range eggs. But I think it's also something deeper, a loss of confidence in human civilisation.
Thank you for this. ++Chaput has always got something interesting to say and his insightful analyses are helpful to me. The section of the speech that chimed particularly well with me was his conclusion that
"... one of the ways we might begin to live more fruitfully in a world that seems so deeply conflicted is to create parishes, seminaries, clubs, colleges and families that are real schools of sanctification. These would be vital in building up society, changing the culture, and trying to build a renewed sense of Christian community."
Hi Joanna! I wanted to contact you and say "hello." I am a mother in the US with 2 little ones. We are members of the Episcopal Church, but I am very interested in liturgical life and seasons and church tradition and a friend introduced me to your book "A Book of Feasts and Seasons." I've enjoyed it very much! Looking at your "About me", it seems we have a lot in common! :) I'm very much looking forward to fall, where I live the summers get very hot! Anyhow, I'd love to know more about your other books. You've got a great writing style!~ Thanks so much, Heather
